How-To: Stream music from iTunes to your iPod/iPhone

Today, I’ll be guiding you through a really cool trick you can do with your Mac & iTunes - Stream whatever’s playing to your iPod/iPhone.

First a few things you’ll need;
- Something to stream the audio with. I’ll be using Rogue Amoeba’s Nicecast app (For Mac OS X - $40, free unrestricted trial avaliable), however any program that lets you stream audio in MP3 format will work. (if you know any - share them in the comments)
- Nullriver’s Tuner for iPod/iPhone ($5 from iTunes), as Safari/QuickTime won’t play streaming audio on your iPhone :-(
- A Wireless Network (if you havent got one already). An AdHoc one should work just fine.

Once you’ve got those two, hit the jump for full instructions.

Using Google as a *free* MobileMe alternative (with push contacts & calendar)

For those who dont want to shell out the $99 for a MobileMe subscription, here’s a free alternative with support for push Contacts & Calendar on your iPod touch or iPhone, thanks to NuevaSync and Google.
(You’ll need the iPhone 2.0 software for this, if you havent upgraded already. Plug your device in and click ‘Check for Updates’ in iTunes)

NuevaSync is a new website which links Google Calendar and Contacts with their Exchange server, letting you sync your Google items with devices that support Microsoft Exchange.

First up, you’re going to need a Google Account (you’ll need a Gmail account if you wish to sync your contacts too.) if you dont already have one (Google Apps accounts work fine). You can sign up here.

Once that is done, NuevaSync reccommends you verify your account, by filling out a simple CAPTCHA.
For regular Gmail and Calendar accounts go to:
https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
For Google Apps accounts go to:
https://www.google.com/a/YOURDOMAIN.com/UnlockCaptcha (substitute ‘YOURDOMAIN’ with well, your domain!)

Read the rest after the jump ;-)

Using Google as a *free* MobileMe alternative (Part2)

In Part One, we covered pushing your Google Contacts and Calendar to your iPod or iPhone and back. In part two, I’m going to show you how you can add your Mac into the mix, so if you update on your iPhone, it gets updated on your Mac too.

With Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.4 at least), it has support for Google Contacts built into Address Book.
Open up Address Book, and choose ‘Address Book’ > ‘Preferences’ from the menu bar.

Address Book - Google Synching
Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!

Tick the ‘Synchronize with Google’ checkbox, click on the Google button and fill in your Google Account.

Address Book - Google2
Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!

That’s your contacts taken care of. Synching iCal takes a bit more work.
The easiest way that I found was to use BusySync, and have it sync with Google every minute.

BusySync
Uploaded with plasq’s Skitch!

I couldnt find a free alternative that was as easy, so if you know one, do leave a comment! :-)

So, maybe all of this is not *really* ‘Push’, but neither is MobileMe.

Things you can use it for;
Now your Mac will sync it’s address book with Google Contacts. NuveaSync will then push the changes to your iPhone.
Add an event on your iPhone, which will then push it through NuveaSync to Google Calendar. Your Mac will then pick this up next time you sync it (using BusySync for example).
And lots of other things too.

Hope that at least some of you got something out of this ;-)

iPhone 3G & iPod Touch 2.0 - software update to hit late June?

Alright its out everyone - grab it here ;-)

Hello all - Long time no blog!
Anyway, this afternoon I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the upcoming release of the iPhone in Australia, as well as the version 2 software upgrade for the iPhone & iPod Touch.

To sum up - I just can’t wait for the iPhone to land in Australia.
Think… GPS, Phone, iPod, etc… all in one. :)

However - I’m a little worried that Telstra won’t be offering it. As of this post, they havent announced any plans to offer it here in Australia, only Optus and Vodafone at this point. And, of course they don’t offer coverage out where I live.
The iPhone would work fine on Telstra’s NextG network - just imagine Mobile Foxtel on the iPhone’s 3.5″ screen… *drool*
So, I might have to see if I can get it unlocked, without a contract. Fingers crossed!

Now, in regards to the v2 update - I think that it might hit earlier than July ;-).
After having a poke around Apple’s site a couple of days back, I noticed an App Store ad down the bottom of the iPod Touch specs page, saying that it’ll hit June 27.

iPod Touch Specs Page - With ad for the App Store
(Click for the whole page).

(oh, and by the way, it’s still up there; iPod Touch specs.

Well, that’s enough rambling from me for today - share your thoughts, etc in the comments. :)

Cheers,
Beau

Download Videos from YouTube, Quickly and Easily!

Another one of those ‘tutorial’ entries, today I’m gonna show you how to quickly and easily download those videos from YouTube. They’ll even copy straight to your iPod.
Alright - the hardest part of this tutorial - saving a bookmark (or favorite) to your address/bookmarks bar.

Easy - drag ‘YouTube Download‘ to your Address bar (or right click and select ‘Add to Favorites’, ‘Add to Bookmarks’ or whatever it is for your browser).

The rest is easy - head to the video that you want. (I’ll use ‘You’ve Seen it all Before‘ for my example), and click that button (or open it in your favorites if that’s where you saved it). You should see a download link just under the ‘Embed’ code. Check the screenshot after the jump if you havent the faintest idea what I’m on about.

Then, just right click, and head to ‘Save File’ if you’re using IE, or ‘Download Linked File’ if you’re a Safari person.

And well, that’s it :-)

Oh, and also worth noting - these are higher quality files than the ones that you’d watch on YouTube, and they can be copied straight to your iPod with iTunes. No encoding crap needed! :-)

Enjoy!
